• Tour of the Rio Grande (metric century)
    29 Sep 2024

Despite my pride saying to ride the full 100 miles, I opted for the 100 kilometers and had a strong finish to me mileage goals. With today’s ride I surpassed my goal and hit 435 miles. And, thanks to some very generous people, I also doubled my fundraising goal.

I might even be back to try again next year.

  • 3/4 and still on track
    21 Sep 2024

Just finished a 44 mile ride, including over 1500 feet of climbing. That puts me at 306 miles done. One more week left and I should be able to get that last 94 miles done.

Two weeks down, and 200 miles done. Despite a rainstorm this morning I still got 35 miles in today to get me back on track.

  • The enemy of my bike is my enemy
    4 Sep 2024

Day two of my riding, and as every other day that I have biked to work the city of Gallup continues to ignore the gravel, dirt, sand, and broken glass in the bike lane along the road that goes right in front of the courthouse and police station. I don’t think it has been swept in over a year.

Today their neglect got me. A tire that has less than 100 miles on it now has a nifty hole in it from broken glass. The road is busy and there is no way to swing into traffics to avoid all the crud. I had to ride through a section of debris and even with the Kevlar lining the glass penetrated to the tube.

I always carry at least two spare inner tubes, patch kits, and CO2 inflation canisters, so I was back on the road in about 10 minutes.

  • And I am off
    3 Sep 2024

Missed the frost two days of the challenge due to traveling to a hot place. It was 110 degrees Sunday in Lake Havasu City, and just as hot Monday when I I left to go back to New Mexico.

It was a real shock to wake up and roll out this morning to 44 degrees. The forecast for the ride home is 86F.

I also left the house in total darkness this morning, so I didn’t see my GPS watch hadn’t started when I left. Fortunately I still have an old school bike computer on my handlebars so o was able to see how far into the ride I actually was and manually enter it.
