I'm Riding For
Mary Ann Bliss
My mom was a cancer survivor and I am a cancer survivor also. We both were teachers of young children. I cannot think of a more fitting tribute to my mom than the effort to save children from the scourge of cancer.
My Story
Kids deserve to live their lives to the fullest, not fight for them.
Over the past decade each September, I've proudly ridden 3,619 miles and raised an incredible $15,529 to support the Children's Cancer Research Fund. This organization is doing vital work, developing lifesaving treatments and relentlessly searching for a cure for childhood cancer.
My commitment to this challenge runs deep, not just for the children I ride for, but also from my own personal experience. During these same 12 years, I've been battling cancer myself, having faced both prostate and bladder cancer. This personal journey has only strengthened my resolve to contribute to a world where no child has to endure such a fight.

My Challenge

Day 22 and 23
23 Sep 2026With these two days I am riding past my 200 mile pledge for the month of September. Yes it has been a struggle to get out almost every day this month and ride but I found that once I got out each day it was easier that I had expected. I know it is the same struggle facing cancer each day as I have done. But I do this in the hope that children won't have to face that struggle in the future.
Today is another match day with the Great Cycle Challenge and any donation given today will be matched. If you have been thinking about giving or want to give a little more today your gift will go twice as far.

Day 21
21 Sep 202612 mile ride today bringing my total for the month to 185 miles, whew! Today while riding I noticed the finishing touches to the Courtney Campbell Causeway Pedestrian/Bike Overpass being delevered. Hopfully in a few weeks it will be compleate and I'll be able to ride without having to wait for the light to cross Gulf to Bay Blvd.

Day 20
20 Sep 2026I had church this morning so I got an afternoon start. Still managed to get in 11 miles in the mid-day heat. Fortunately on the way back the clouds mooved in and gave me a break from the heat. I'm at a 171 miles so I hope to finish my 200 miles by Wednesday. That good because my bike needs to spend some time getting a tune-up. The brakes are a little soft and the gears are not changing as crisply as I would like.

10.3 mi ride today with my new Superhero jersey, the Boy Wonder! After I finished my video a guy on BIG e-bike struck up a conversation with me, Among other things he expressed his opinion on wearing a helmet while riding a bike. He didn't think it was necessary and showed me his in the basket of his bike. He said his wife made him wear it and he took it off as soon as he was out of sight. I told him I wore mine every time I rode my bike and would not ride without one. Each to their own but his decision may affect other more than mine. We also discussed our ages and discovered he is only a few months older than me. Oh he also grows pot in his backyard and was smoking some in a little device while he rode. He also talked about his wife, kids and grandkids which all live in the same house.
I did not share as much as him and told him I needed to get on with my ride. Some people just need someone to listen......

Day 17 the big circle
17 Sep 2026Rode a little over 10 miles today and tried a little diffrent route. I rode in a big circle and tried not to repete any of my route. Most of my rides I go one way for a while and then turn around and head back the way i came. Today I didn't. The only time I did was on the road into and out of Lake Chautauqua Park. And there only a short while because I found a walking and bike trail that ran slightly diffrent from the road leading into the park. I admit I did have to look up the pronunciation of the park. The park is located on the map where my ride vears off to the west at the lake.
