My mom was a cancer survivor and I am a cancer survivor also. We both were teachers of young children. I cannot think of a more fitting tribute to my mom than the effort to save children from the scourge of cancer.

My 11th Year in the Great Cycle Challenge: Riding for a Cure

This September marks my 11th year participating in the Great Cycle Challenge to fight kids' cancer, and I couldn't be more passionate about this cause. Why do I ride? Because right now, cancer remains the leading killer of children from disease in the United States. Every year, over 15,700 children are diagnosed, and heartbreakingly, 38 children lose their lives to cancer each week.

Kids deserve to live their lives to the fullest, not fight for them.

Over the past decade, I've proudly ridden 3,434 miles and raised an incredible $11,697 to support the Children's Cancer Research Fund. This organization is doing vital work, developing lifesaving treatments and relentlessly searching for a cure for childhood cancer.

My commitment to this challenge runs deep, not just for the children I ride for, but also from my own personal experience. During these same 11 years, I've been battling cancer myself, having faced both prostate and bladder cancer. This personal journey has only strengthened my resolve to contribute to a world where no child has to endure such a fight.

Please, join me in supporting these brave children by making a donation. Your generosity will directly help fund critical research, giving these kids the brighter futures they so richly deserve.

Thank you for helping to change little lives.

  • Day 6
    7 Sep 2026

Day 6 , Got out riding later today a little later, around noon. So it was hot! Because of that no video.

Above os a view from the top of the pedeseraian walkway leading to the Courtney Campbell Causeway. It's nice that there is some seating up here to enjoy the view. I remember from looking at the plans for the walkway that there will eventually be some shade installed up here too. That will be nice.

Day 5 of the Great Cycle Challenge. I rode a little farther today to make up for yesterday. About 12.5 miles out onto the Causeway. Once I got to my halfway mark I stopped in the shade of some palm trees to have a drink of water. While there enjoying the view and complating life in genereral I noticed some marks on one palm tree. It was where lightning had struck just that tree and none of the others. You can see the line rinning down from the top of the tree to the ground. There were no marks on any of the other trees around there just this one unlucky one. I don't know if it will live or if that lightning strik will kill it. I'll make sure to ride out here again and keep you posted on the tree.

My ride today was a little shorter and a little later. This was because I had to go for a PET scan. I have been undergoing treatment for prostate cancer for the last few years. I guess helping the kids doesn't make me immune to this disease.

But even with this mornings delay I still managed to get in 3 miles.

    3 Sep 2026

Good ride today. Started a little before 9am and rode for an hour and a half for 11.62 miles. That puts my total this month to 33 miles with a total of $904 raised to support children's cancer research. The traffic seemed a little light this morning so I crossed 60 and road a ways on the causeway. I always enjoy the ride out there.

Got up early today again to avoid the rain. I rode out to the causeway but not across 60. It' too busy this early in the morning and they were working on the lights so everything was in a mess. It was nice to see people out on the pier this morning in Water Front park. Got a little over 10 miles again this morning .
