I'm Riding For

Many close relatives and friends

I ride because I can. I ride with knees that sometimes give me fits and decide to make their presence known at the most painful and inopportune times. I ride with a back that constantly reminds me that I’d better keep up with the stretching, yoga, and strength training if I want to stay ahead of the stenosis. I ride with RA that occasionally tells me it’s time to adjust my position because of the pain. But I can ride. And I don’t take that for granted. I grew up riding a bike from a young age—with the help of two older brothers who probably used some questionable methods of training and motivation along the way. I delivered newspapers on my bike. I explored my community with childhood friends on our bikes. I outran military police in Guam on my bike. And yes, I got into trouble on my bike, too. (My mom can verify that one.) Riding wasn’t just something I did growing up. It was a huge part of my childhood. And that’s what I want for kids today. I want them to experience a childhood filled with a little reckless abandon on a bike. I want them to know what it feels like to be free—to hop on a bike with their friends and explore their world without needing a destination or a schedule. I want them to ride down roads, through neighborhoods, along trails, and around the places they call home. I want them to laugh, get dirty, make memories, and maybe even get into a little trouble along the way. Because sometimes, those are the moments you remember for the rest of your life. So, yes, I ride with knees that hurt, a back that complains, and a body that sometimes tells me to slow down. But I keep riding. I ride because I can. And as long as I can, I will.
